Governor, DLLR want to hear from Marylanders about paid leave

(June 14, 2017 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.) -- Do you get paid time off at work? The state wants to know.

The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, led by Sec. Kelly Schulz, has opened an eight-question survey as part of its field study on paid leave.

The survey is a direct response to Gov. Larry Hogan's May 25 executive order for the study, which he plans to use to shape new policy on paid leave requirements.

"We still believe it's best for employers to determine for themselves what benefits they can afford to offer their employees," said Maryland Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Christine Ross. "But we also want Marylanders to be healthy and keep their jobs. We're happy to help DLLR understand all of the impacts of a paid leave mandate."

Hogan issued the executive order the day he announced his veto of House Bill 1, the mandatory paid leave bill that would have required employers with as few as 15 workers to provide them with up to five days of paid leave if they worked an average of just 12 hours per week.

Hogan had proposed his own bill which, among other differences, pushed the minimum number of employees to 50. Legislators did not act on that bill.
