(March 13, 2017 — Baltimore) They say the house always wins.
Maryland Chamber member Live! Casino is turning its lucky hand into something meaningful for others, including women affected by breast cancer.
Together, Live! Casino & Hotel and its owner, The Cordish Companies, are one of the region’s leading charitable donors. They ranked as the fourth-most charitable organization in the Baltimore region in 2015.
“At Live! Casino, we take philanthropy to heart and consider our community part of the extended Live!” family,” said Cordish Global Gaming Group President Rob Norton. “We are very proud to contribute to our community financially, through volunteerism, and by making our facilities at Live! Casino available to local organizations for fundraising activities and events.”
The Anne Arundel County gaming, entertainment, restaurant and hotel venue was one of the first casinos to open in Maryland, and it quickly made a commitment to improving the quality of life in its community. Live! Director of Communications Carmen E. Gonzales said that, among its many initiatives, the casino and its employees work closely with Susan G. Komen Maryland on the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure each year.
For Norton, it got personal last fall when Live! once again sponsored the Race for the Cure, just a few months after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“It’s a little closer to the heart, and with all the great work that Susan G. Komen does, she’s got a better chance than ever,” he told WMAR ABC 2’s Jamie Costello and Kelly Swoope the morning of the race.
In addition to that collaboration, The Cordish Companies and Live! Casino & Hotel give generously to Johns Hopkins University, the Casey Cares Foundation, the Capital Pride Alliance, the Anne Arundel Community College Foundation, Horizon Day Camp, the Anne Arundel County ASPCA, and the American Red Cross. They feed hundreds of families at Thanksgiving through pantry donations, and participate in the U.S. Marines Toys For Tots program. They donate to the Blue Angels Foundation and their table games dealers run the games for the annual USO Casino Night benefiting military families.
They also reach regional Asian and Hispanic communities through several international and nonprofit and business organization sponsorships.
In January, the casino launched a month-long Play $10/Give $10 program that raised nearly $1 million for its philanthropic fund. The program donated the first $10 of any gamer’s Live! Rewards® Card slot machine or table game play to the fund.
“Once again, Live! Casino is setting itself apart as a dedicated supporter of our local community,” said Mark Roeder, Susan G. Komen Maryland’s executive director. “As part of the Live! family, we are grateful for their many contributions that involve ongoing outreach, financial donations and volunteerism in support of the Susan G. Komen Maryland mission.”
The Live! philanthropy funds are distributed to those who request support. Live! has a community relations committee that evaluates requests based on specific criteria.
It’s a connection to the state that’s personal.
“Maryland is not just a place of business to Live! Casino,” Norton said. “It is the longtime home of the Cordish family.
“We are always looking for new ways to be a good neighbor.”
You can bet on that.
