President & CEO, Maryland Chamber of Commerce
Community-minded

Could you tell us a little bit about your background? What led you to where you are today, President and CEO of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce?

I am a very community-minded individual and working at the chamber of commerce is just a perfect combination of both community and business issues and just really allows me to help people and mentor people and effect change.

In your opinion, what is the most exciting initiative of the Maryland Chamber?

The most exciting initiative to me, right now, for the Maryland Chamber, is the Federation Partnership that is launching this end of January. Fourteen chambers, local and county, across the state have decided to gather together to become federation partners so we can more adequately represent small business across the state within our legislature.

What do you hope to see for the future of business in this state?

What we hope to see is a more competitive state for business in Maryland. Businesses are thriving, we want them to be able to continue to grow, and we want them to have the financial support from the legislators to be able to do so. That will keep us more competitive with our neighbors in Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware. It will make the state more prosperous in the long-run.

How do you see the Maryland Chamber and its Foundation supporting that vision?

The Maryland Chamber is going to continue to focus on any bill that comes out that will potentially damage business or make it more costly to do business in this state and we’re going to support legislation that creates more jobs.

What has continued to inspire and motivate you throughout your career?

The most exciting thing is being able to effect community change. Whether it’s through education, workforce development, health care initiatives, creating job opportunities or fostering our talent pipeline, it all inspires me to come to work and do my job, every day. My staff and team at the Maryland Chamber also continue to motivate me.

What motivates you in your personal life?

My family. I’m excited about what my adult sons are doing, and I just try to keep up with them. They are strivers, and so, that makes me want to work even harder.
